The Kantha Collection
Kantha symbolizes making whole again that which was fragmented or broken. It is one of the oldest forms of quilting & embroidery from India, using recycled textiles to create beautiful heirlooms. The Kantha stitch would cover the entire cloth to provide strength over soft, layered recycled fabrics. Kanthas are said to be the repositories of memories of particular makers and givers. I used this theme to create this collection: My daughter and nieces are the beautiful fabric layers, and my mom is the stitch that has woven our lives together. With a new granddaughter, I hope to expand the collection to include her own custom color. The Kantha Collection closely relates to our craft of art – we take well loved pieces of furniture and give them new life.
Alexandra’s Harbor:
The name Alexandra is a Greek name that means "defender of the people." Named after my daughter, this deep green with blue-gray undertones is reminiscent of all of the harbors at nighttime that we’d love to visit.
Claire’s Lantern:
The name Claire is a French name that means "clear" or "bright". This forest green has hints of gray, which bring versatility and depth – Claire’s lantern leads the way in this earthy color.
Addison’s Earth:
This color is grounded - the perfect neutral, a muted olive green that fades into a medium gray. Addison means “of the earth and ground,” and this color will move through different palettes easily.
Violet’s Grace:
This is probably my favorite color of the collection – it is a graceful neutral that blends well with sages, earthy colors, blues, and greens. Named after my 6 year old niece, Violet Grace, it is a delicate mix of heathered plum with a velvet brown undertone, making it modern and stylish.
Meme’s Stitch:
Meme’s Stitch is the perfect color. The softest touch of green invigorates this grayish hue, which will make it an excellent color for a paint wash on bare wood – the touch of green neutralizes red tones, while the gray undertone makes it sensible and relevant in your current color palette.
About the Artist
I found this career by accident. After leaving a career in Child Protective Services, I found myself without direction after a decade of serving others. With a paintbrush in my hand, I dived into furniture painting, becoming more inspired by the day. Soon, my friend and business partner, Lisa, and I opened a small, 500 sq ft store filled to the brim with painted furniture. Ten years later, we’ve learned, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, now owning a 3,000 sq ft store, offering furniture & supplies, recognized as one of the largest, most reputable DIY supplies ecommerce stores in the United States. About Melange ONE Paints
A signature one step (primer, paint and topcoat) furniture paint. It is zero-low VOC, comes in all 95 colors, has an acrylic water-based formula and easy soap/water clean-up. It includes a primer; however, when painting new/raw/previously stained wood, a stain blocking primer is recommended for tannin blockage. ONE does not need to be sealed as it has the protective topcoat built right in; however, for high use areas such as dining tables, cabinetry etc., you may use additional primers and topcoat, as preferred to ensure coverage and durability. The finish of this paint has a lustrous sheen; you can really see and feel the protective finish.
